The symbol of Vilnius! Standing proud atop the hill in the heart of the city, this medieval castle tower isn't just a pile of old stones—it's the beating heart of Lithuanian identity and a window into the country's fascinating past.
You can go in for free right up to the top and enjoy the views. You need to pay to go into the tower itself, which has the museum exhibits and more information about Vilnius' history.
Quick history
Gediminas Tower is the last remaining part of a 14th-century castle built by Grand Duke Gediminas, the legendary founder of Vilnius. It survived centuries of battles, rebuilds, and even Soviet occupation — now it stands as a symbol of Lithuanian independence and pride.
Why visit?
The best view in Vilnius. From up here, you'll capture Instagram-worthy panoramas of the city and see all the way to the TV tower on the horizon. Plus, the interactive exhibits inside bring Lithuania's dramatic history to life in ways no textbook ever could.
How to get there
You can enter two ways.
If you're up for it, you can walk up (it's a bit steep and the path is cobbles). Find the entrance round the back of the hill, through the Bernandine Gardens and onto Trispalvės aleja.
There's also the little funicular lift, which you can take by walking into the Old Arsenal Museum garden. Tickets are 3EUR.
