FREE LIFE IN THE PRISON

Recently turned into a creative zone, Lukisiu Prison is an awesome space that fuses Vilnius' history with its future.

LUKISKES PRISON 2.0

A former prison turned cultural hotspot, Lukiškės (pronounced "Lukishkiss") is one of the most unique places in Vilnius. Built in 1904 and closed in 2019, it’s now reopened as Lukiskes Prison 2.0.

It's home to Vilnius' creatives, with recording studios, dance halls and rehearsal spaces. Alongside that there's concerts, outdoor cinema, and underground parties - all inside what used to be solitary cells and prison yards. Oh, and Netflix filmed parts of Stranger Things here. No big deal.

Quick history

Originally built during the Russian Empire, the prison held everyone from political prisoners to criminals during its 100+ years in operation. It was used by the Nazis, Soviets, and Lithuanian state — until it finally shut down and got a new life as a cultural venue in 2021.

Why visit?

There’s nowhere else in Vilnius quite like it. Whether you're catching a gig, doing a tour, or just wandering the eerie hallways, it’s both historic and bizarrely fun.

There's prison tours available which are great, especially at night.

How to get there

Lukiškės is just a 10-15 minute walk from the Cathedral Square and Old Town. Head down Gediminas Prospektas (the main street) until you get to the massive Lukiskiu Square, with the big flag in the middle (you can also hop on any trolleybus or bus that stops at Lukiškių aikštė). It's only 2 minutes from there, but surprisingly well hidden - use google maps or just ask for directions. Locals all know where it is.

Tips for visitors

  • Try to visit during an event - concerts and festivals make the most of the creepy-cool atmosphere
  • There are regular English-language tours, including some after dark
  • Some areas are still gritty and raw - wear good shoes and keep your eyes open
  • In the summer there is a big outdoor stage and lots of concerts on - why not book tickets and use that as your excuse to visit Vilnius?
  • There's a bar and kitchen where you can order pizza, fries and snacks
